Saint Laurent 26 Fall new arrival Icare Bag Review: It’s Huge, It’s $5,500… Still Look So Good?

Aug 30, 2026

The first time I really looked at the Saint Laurent Icare, my reaction was pretty simple: this bag is enormous.

Not just “large tote” big, either. The Maxi has that exaggerated, almost oversized-travel-bag proportion that makes most everyday handbags look tiny next to it. And yet, the more I see it styled on the shoulder, the more I understand why the Icare has managed to stick around.

Maybe being slightly unreasonable is exactly the point.

Is the oversized shape actually the best part?

The classic Icare Maxi is made from soft quilted lambskin with an oversized Cassandre logo sitting right in the center. Normally, such a large YSL emblem might feel a little too obvious for me, but somehow the scale works here.

A tiny logo on a bag this dramatic would almost look stranger.

What makes the Icare interesting is that the leather doesn’t hold a rigid tote shape. It slouches, folds and settles against the body, which makes the huge size feel less formal and much cooler in real styling photos.

There’s also an internal chain that allows the sides to be pulled inward. Leave them open and it becomes a full-on maxi shopper; close them and the silhouette looks narrower and a little more manageable.

“Manageable,” of course, is relative. This is still a very big bag.

Practical luxury… or a bag that creates its own problems?

There’s no argument about capacity.

The Icare can handle a laptop, pouch, wallet, bottle, sunglasses and all those random things that mysteriously end up in a daily tote. Saint Laurent also includes a removable zip pouch, which honestly feels necessary because finding a tiny key inside this enormous interior could become an adventure of its own.

But here’s the contradiction I keep coming back to.

This looks like a bag designed to be thrown over the shoulder and used without much thought, yet the Maxi is made from luxurious lambskin. Soft lambskin looks beautiful when it develops that relaxed shape, but it isn’t exactly the material I would choose if my priority were worry-free commuting.

And with any oversized bag, there’s another problem: if the space exists, I will probably fill it.

Laptop? Sure. Charger? Why not. Water bottle? Of course. Maybe a cardigan too.

Suddenly that wonderfully practical maxi bag is pulling your shoulder toward the floor.

Then there’s the $5,500 question

As of August 2026, the black Saint Laurent Icare Maxi in quilted lambskin is priced at $5,500 on the official US website.

Saint Laurent now offers several variations of the Icare idea as well. The Icare Medium in quilted nappa is $4,700, while the Icare Hobo is $4,500. The smaller Icarino costs $3,200, and the Mini Icarino goes down to $2,900.

So if you simply like the quilted leather and oversized Cassandre motif, you certainly don’t have to buy the Maxi.

But I also wonder whether downsizing misses the whole point.

The Medium is probably easier to use. The Hobo might make more sense as an everyday shoulder bag. Yet the original Icare looks memorable precisely because it is so unapologetically oversized.

Buying the practical version of an impractical design feels strangely contradictory.

And apparently I’m not the only one who changed my mind

When the Icare first became a major talking point, reactions online were pretty divided.

Some handbag lovers said they normally preferred mini bags but gradually started understanding the appeal of the Icare. Others thought it was practical and stylish but worried it would become a trend piece. The price, potential weight and sheer size came up repeatedly too.

I understand all three arguments.

Looking at the bag alone, I sometimes think, “Do I really need a tote this huge?”

Then I see it thrown over the shoulder with a black blazer, jeans or a long coat and suddenly the proportions make sense again.

That may be why it has lasted longer than some people expected. Rather than disappearing after its initial hype, the Icare name has expanded into Medium, Hobo and smaller Icarino versions.

So who should actually buy the Icare Maxi?

Probably not someone searching for the most sensible $5,500 everyday bag.

It’s oversized, the lambskin requires some care, and filling all that available space could make it heavy very quickly. On a smaller frame, the proportions may also feel overwhelming, so this is definitely a bag I would want to try on before buying.

But for someone who dresses relatively simply and likes one accessory to change the whole silhouette? I can see the attraction.

A blazer, denim, sunglasses and an Icare already look like a complete Saint Laurent mood.

This is smooth leather, more expensive of course

And that’s ultimately where I land with this bag.

The Icare Maxi isn’t especially logical. It’s too large for some people, too expensive to treat casually and probably more bag than most of us actually need.

Yet I still find myself looking at the Maxi instead of the more practical versions.

Maybe that’s the point. At $5,500, practicality alone would never be enough to justify it anyway.

This version is Moooooor expensive of course
